Commerce, in Wilson County, is located just north of Watertown, about halfway between Interstate 40 and Highway 70.

Before July of 1840, there were only a few Cumberland Presbyterians in the vicinity of Commerce, so the Methodist let the Cumberland Presbyterians hold services in their church building. In the summer of 1849, the Presyterians held a two week protracted meeting under the ministerial aid of T. Calhon, T. Y. Davis [this should be P. Y.Davis], J. C. Provine, and J. L. McDowell during which many souls were converted.

In view of the spiritual interest and to better promote Christ's Kingdom, it was seen proper to organize a branch of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Rev. J. L. McDowell delivered an address on the principles of the Cumberland Presbyterian government, and three ruling elders were appointed to serve until the congregation could properly elect elders. The church was organized with twenty-eight members on August 13, 1849, following which the need for a church building and pastor was evident.

The Presbytery was duly petitioned, and Rev. J. C. Provine was sent as their first pastor. Following the selection of a building committee, work on the church began. By mid-winter, enough materials had been secured, and as soon as the weather permitted, a new church was erected. The first sermon was preached on May 9, 1850, by Rev. M. S. Vaughn. The first elders were elected in July 1850.

The original church building lasted almost 100 years, or until the present building was erected in 1941. Recent additions to the present building have included; rest rooms, folding doors, which close off the two wings for class rooms, and also a new class room.

The church membership has shared trials and joys down through the years, but has felt the goodness of the Lord in all things. They have been blessed with able pastors including the following: the Reverends M. S. Vaughn, J. C. Provine, D. R. Patterson, L. B. Bone, H. T. Lanham, [this should be H. J. Lanham] Ira W. King, Herford, J. H. Barbee, Hugh L. Goodpaster [this should be Hugh L. Goodpasture], Stone, W. W. Suddarth, S. O. McAdoo, J. M. Forsythe, Williams, J. Smith, W. E. Miller, G. B. Dennine, Clarence Barger, C. E. Trent, J. E. Doyle, Hayden Swann, Arvin C. Milby, James Cockerham, A. D. Salisbury, Norman Nilson, Lonnie Lance, and Johnny Watson.
