Within the last year we have been called upon to announce the death of quite a number of the oldest ministers in our Church. We have just received the sad intelligence of the death of Dr. H. B. Warren, of Texas. From The Northern Texan, we take the following:
Rev. H. B. Warren died at his home in Sulphur Springs on the 19th instant, after an illness of some four weeks.
Dr. Warren was no ordinary man. For nearly a half century he has been upon the stage of public thought and action; and in the States of Tennessee, Arkansas, and Texas, has figured conspicuously among his fellow-men. He was a man of decided talents, and possessed of great logical force and concentration of mental power. But his most admirable traits of mind were that noble independence that prompted him to think, and speak, and act for himself on all questions, and that liberal tolerance that ever accorded to all human beings the same great natural privilege.
A consistent member, and an able minister of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Dr. Warren never permitted himself to be bound or controlled in his religious faith by Creeds or Confessions of Faith. He read and interpreted the Word of God for himself and the people, regardless of creeds or sects. And he willingly accorded to every other human being the same glorious privilege. As a man thoroughly versed in Church history, and as a sound exponent of the true teachings of the Bible, he had few equals in the South-west.
Dr. Warren having lost his ample fortune in the war, took refuge
in Texas, where he engaged in the practice of law with good success.
But it was chiefly in the field of Theology, where the principal
part of his laborious and useful life had been spent, that he
excelled. His death is a heavy loss to society, as well as to
his family and friends.
