His ability as a parliamentarian, his popularity as a churchman, and his merited prominence as a member of the Court of Appeals of his state, would have made Ruling Elder W. E. Settle, of Frankfort, Ky., a very hard man to beat for the moderatorship of the Seventy-third General Assembly if another than Dr. Tinnon had been his opponent. But it took no prophet to safely predict weeks ago who was to be the presiding officer of this meeting; and it was a high tribute to Judge Settle that against such a contestant his own minority was not much smaller. Everybody therefore joyfully voted "Aye" when a motion was proposed to make Dr. Tinnon's election unanimous.

Dr. Tinnon is a Tennessean, having been born just sixty years ago in Giles county. He was educated in the neighborhood schools and in Giles College. The youngest child of Robert and Elizabeth Tinnon, he was reared on his father's farm; but in his early manhood he began the study of law under the tuition of his brother, J. A. Tinnon, who for years was judge of the Court of Appeals for the Middle Division of Tennessee. Dr. Tinnon was admitted to the bar in 1861. Soon thereafter he entered the Confederate army and served through the Civil War. Twice he was severely wounded and twice was a prisoner. After the war he taught in a school in North Alabama.

In the light of his great success and usefulness as a preacher, it will be surprising to Cumberland Presbyterians to learn that until 1873 Dr. Tinnon was not a Christian. In September after his conversion in August, he joined Tennessee Presbytery and was licensed to preach. A year thereafter he was ordained and in January, 1905 [sic: 1875], took charge of our church at Huntsville, Ala. In 1877 he was called to the pulpit of the Edgefield Church, now known as Russell Street Church, Nashville. He served in this capacity until October, 1894, when he was called to Fort Worth, Texas, where he achieved notable distinction and where he succeeded in erecting one of the handsomest stone houses of worship in the denomination. In Fort Worth he was probably the most popular pastor in any denomination, a recognized leader of the religious and philanthropic work of the city.

In 1892 he became pastor in the college town of Lincoln, Ill., where again he left a worthy monument to his activity and ability by securing the erection of the handsomest house of worship in the place. Yielding to the call of a great need, he accepted in 1902 a call to the mission church of the denomination in Denver, Colo., where he has fully entered upon a prosperous pastorate.

Dr. Tinnon is making a most acceptable presiding officer, characteristically courteous, considerate and kind in all its rulings.
