Rev. A. G. Burrow, son of Rev.
Reuben and Elizabeth Burrow, was born August 13, 1834,
on a farm in Madison County, Tenn. He spent his early life on
the farm with his parents, attending to that part of the farm
life that was allotted to him. He was a dutiful son, was always
ready to do the biding of his father and mother, who were Cumberland
Presbyterians of the best type, his father being one of the leading
ministers in that church up to the time of his death. He was educated
at old Bethel
College, located in McLemoresville, Tenn., and was ordained
a minister in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, in 1856, and
was therefore a minister for more than a half century. His public
ministry began in and around Vincennes, Ind. He enlisted in the
Confederate Army, with is brothers, and served as Chaplain through
the conflict, and while in the war received a wound in the head
from which he never fully recovered. He departed this life March
18, 1909, at 6:30 p.m. Surrounded by relatives and friends, he
fell asleep in Jesus, to wake up on the judgment morning when
the dead in Christ shall rise, and "Be caught up with him
in the air." He was buried in the cemetery at McLemoresville,
Tenn., where his father, mother, and brothers are buried. In his
death the Church loses a firm believer in and adherent to her
medium system of doctrines, his family a good husband and father,
and the world a good man. He preached his last sermon in my church,
and he used a text, "What shall it profit a man, if he gain
the whole world and lose his own soul; or what will a man give
in exchange for his soul," and as a context, "Lay up
for yourselves treasures in heaven." His treasures was in
heaven, and it was his greatest delight to do good to all men.
It afforded the writer a great pleasure to visit the home of Brother
Burrow and listen to his good and wholesome advice. The many readers
of The Banner will miss the good articles he sometimes contributed
to its columns. We all shall miss him, but we shall meet again
where there will be no parting. He said to me, "I want to
go to the General Assembly in the interest of the Cumberland Presbyterian
Church," the church he loved. Brother Burrow was untiring
in his efforts to do something good, and by his beautiful life
the burden of others was made lighter, while the bonds that held
together soul and body have been severed, they only severed to
unite in the bonds that can never be broken with our blessed Lord,
whom he served, with untiring zeal for many long years. When his
physical strength was so impaired by age he used his pen that
he might send a message to the lost in that way, and encourage
the children of the house-hold of faith. Yes, we will miss him,
but we shall meet again in the land of rest, in that "House
not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." Let us so live
and move and have our hearts in touch with the Divine, that we
will have that blessed assurance, through Jesus Christ our Lord,
of meeting our loved ones in glory. To his wife and son and daughter
and sisters, we extend our heartfelt sympathy, for as Jesus wept
at the grave of Lazarus, as we weep for our loved ones. We shall
meet again.--Rev. C. H. Walton, Memphis, Tenn.

Chaplains with the cavalry had a peculiar lot. Their only place
during a battle was with their regiments. Chaplain A. G. Burrow
was one of these. He was wounded, and came to the writer's tent.
It was winter and bitter cold. The wounded chaplain had no overcoat.
His other coat was thin and ragged. All his clothing was worn
out. His wound was in his head, and his skull had just been trepanned.
His face was the color of a corpse. He staggered as he walked.
His voice, once so quick and cheerful, was faint and faltering.
The wound was four inches long. Yet this man, who might have had
a comfortable home under his father's roof--who, both by reason
of his profession, and on account of his wound, might have found
exemption from further service--chose rather to remain as chaplain
with the soldiers, and continue his efforts to lead them to their
Savior.
