"The
Committee appointed to examine the minutes of Middle Tennessee
Synod reported, that they have examined the minutes of 1841 and
1842 and find nothing worthy of remark, but would call the attention
of the Assembly to a petition to this Assembly to divide said
Synod, which report was received. And the petition referred to,
which is contained in the minutes of said Synod, was read, the
prayer therein contained granted, which is in the following words:
'That the General Assembly of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church
be and is hereby respectfully petitioned to divide Middle Tennessee
Synod by striking off the Hiwassee, Knoxville and Ocoee Presbyteries,
and form a new one to be known by the name of the East Tennessee
Synod, and include said three Presbyteries. That the first meeting
of said Synod be held at Fork Creek Church, Monroe County, Tennessee,
on Friday before the third Sabbath in October, 1843, and that
Rev. John Tate be appointed the first Moderator
and Rev. James W. Ramsay his alternate.'"
