Red
Oak Presbytery - Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas
"Your
committee appointed to confer with those who might wish to present
themselves as candidates for the ministry would report that we
have confered with Bros. J. W. Stone, L. C. Collier, and
Wm. C. rushing, and are satisfied that they are members in good
standing in their respective congregations, and from experience,
we believe them to be truly impressed to the great work. Bro.
Rushing we learn was a candidate under the care of Madison Presbytery
and has no letter, but promises to obtain one and present it to
presbytery as soon as obtained. We recommend that they be taken
under the care of this Presbytery as probationers for the ministry.
That Bro. Rushing prepare a discourse on Rom. 5:1, Bro. Stone
on St. John, 3:16 and Bro. Collier on 1 Peter 1:8 to be read at
the next meeting of Presbytery. Respectfully Submitted, W. D.
Wear, A.
S. Hayer, C. W. Berry, Committee."

"The

We have examined Bros. R. J. Haynes, J. W. Stone,

thoroughly as we could in our limited time and we are happy to
say that their examination showed a commendable advancement in
their studies, and an eager desire for that knowledge which is
necessary in their preparation for the ministry. Respectfully
submitted, D.

The Cumberland Presbyterian Church will mourn the death of
Rev. J. Wood Stone, which occurred at Bowling Green, Ky.,
July 4, 1904, after an illness of many months. Brother Stone's
clean, pious life, his fearless advocacy of what he conceived
to be right, and his high order of talent won for him a coveted
place in the hearts of his brethren. He has held pastoral charges
in Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas, California, Colorado and Oregon.
He was fifty-three years of age and a native of Texas, and leaves
a mother and several brothers and sisters in that state. He is
survived also by a wife and two children. His funeral took place
on Wednesday, the 5th, at the First
Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Bowling Green, being conducted
by J.
S. Grider, D.D., of Smith's Grove, Ky.
