Obituary of Ann E. or G. Frazier (Brown) Stockton

STOCKTON.--Died, Sept. 19, 1881, in Jackson county, Ala., Mrs. Ann E., wife of Rev. E. J. Stockton, in the 66th year of her age.

She was a sister of the late Gen. J. P. Frazier, well known as an able and faithful legislator, and also of Revs. S. W., Robert, and Albert Frazier, distinguished ministers in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Her parents removed from East Tennessee, and settled in this county when she was a little child; she was baptized in childhood by Rev. A. J. Steele; professed religion at a camp-meeting in Maynard's Cove when about sixteen years old; joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and remained a faithful and devoted member until her death--a period of fifty years. Sister Stockton was no ordinary woman; her mind was of a superior order; she was a safe and prudent counselor, a wise and thoughtful friend, a steadfast and devoted wife, a kind and generous neighbor, a true and sincere friend to the Church and to the poor. Her character, in all the elements of true excellence, was steady and uniform--not fitful and spasmodic like a meteoric glare, but gentle and constant as the mild and radiant glow of the fixed star. Her last illness was brief and violent; she could say but little of her future prospects, but her life speaks with a clear and distinct voice. A large and sorrowing assemblage of her friends and neighbors accompanied the grief-stricken husband and the remains of his beloved wife to the family burying ground of the Fraziers, where the writer of this preached her funeral from Psalm CXVI, 5-15; when tenderly, slowly, and sadly we laid her down to rest beside her kindred, and sorrowfully we bade her farewell, feeling that our great loss is her unspeakable gain.           J. R. MORRIS.
