The Rev. Alexander C. Stockard is listed as minister of the Cleveland Church from December 1857 until October 3, 1859. Session records indicate that the Session met in his house while he was pastor. A letter from W. H. Crawford, who was visiting Cleveland on May 5, 1858, states that he met with "Brother Stockard and that he is succeeding well in sustaining our cause in Cleveland. He is a whole-souled brother and a good preacher. All that is wanting to enable anyone to love him as a brother is to know the man."
After the Civil War, Stockard practiced law in Humphreys County, Tennessee, and was listed in Humphreys County historical records as pastor of the Pleasant Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church in the late 1800's and of the Mariah Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1881.
The Rev. Mr. Stockard was born on January 8, 1829, and died on May 19, 1891. He and his wife, Mary Jane, were the parents of at least nine children. One of his sons, James L., became a Cumberland Presbyterian minister. Another son, Sam, sheriff of Humphreys County, was killed in the line of duty. The Rev. Mr. Stockard and many family members are buried in the Stockard Cemetery located in the White Oak Community of Humphreys County, Tennessee.

In late 1871, the Denominational Board of Missions was able to persuade the Rev. A. C. Stockard of Waverly, Tennessee to take charge of the First Church in Chattanooga. Stockard began his tenure as pastor of the church on October 1, but resigned on December 1. The reasons for his brief stay in Chattanooga are unknown.
