"Presbytery was called to order by the Moderator, and proceeded to license ... A. E. Foust...to preach the gospel, Rev. J. L. Dickens presiding. Record of which is a follows: At Pisgah, Carroll County, Tenn. on the 7th day of October, 1888, the Presbytery of Hopewell, having received testimonials in favor of E. H. Liles, A. E. Foust, W. H. Parnell and J. R. Hume, of their good moral character; of their being in the communion of the church, proceeded to take the usual parts of trial for their licensure, and they, having given satisfaction as to their aptness to teach, as to their experimental acquaintance with religion, as to their internal call for the work of the ministry, and as to their proficiency in divinity, the Presbytery did, and do hereby express their approbation of all these parts of trial; and they, having adopted the Confession of Faith of this Church and satisfactorily answered the questions appointed to be put to candidates to be licensed by the Presbytery, did and do hereby license them, the said E. H. Liles, A. E. Foust, W. H. Parnel and J. R. Hume, to preach the Gospel of Christ, as practitioners of the holy ministry within the bounds of this Presbytery, or wherever God in his providence may cast their lots."

"Your Committee on Literature and Theology would make the following report: The committee were all present on Thursday, except Rev. T. W. Cannon. We examined candidates J. A. McIlwain and O. B. McConnel, on Geography. We also examined licentiates Grier, Bryant, Parnell and Foust on Theology, they all having been passed in college on English Grammar, Geography and Natural Philosophy; Bros. Bryant and Foust also on Astronomy. Bro Foust passed a satisfactory examination on Church History.

We recommend 1st, that the candidates prepare for examination at next meeting of the Presbytery on English Grammar and Natural Philosophy.

2d. That the licentiates prepare for final examination on Astronomy, the Government of the C. P. Church and Ecclesiastical History.

3d. That the examination of A. E. Foust be sustained as popular preparatory to ordination. The Moderator preach the ordination sermon on Saturday at 11:00 o'clock a.m., and that the ordination follow, Rev. H. R. Reed presiding and giving the charge.

4th. The sermons read by your candidates we recommend be sustained as part of trial.

5th. We recommend that the Rev. T. F. Crofford be added to our committee in place of Rev. F. H. Ford whose time now expires.

Respectfully submitted,
F. H. Ford,
P. F. Johnson,
