Church News Notes.

--There will be many who will grieve to know that Rev. T. W. Cannon, Greenfield, Tenn., is in all probability dead at this time. His daughter, Miss Ruby, wrote us under date of the 5th inst. that her father was then at the point of death. Heart trouble was the affliction. Our sympathy and prayers are for the afflicted ones.

Church News Notes.

--Our announcement last week of the serious illness of Rev. T. W. Cannon, in a measure, prepared our readers for the sad announcement we must make this week of his death at Greenfield, Tenn., August 10, at 10:45 a.m. Mr. Cannon had suffered for five weeks with heart trouble. The bereaved wife and children have our tenderest sympathy in their deep sorrow.

Rev. T. W. Cannon, whose death was reported two weeks ago, and whose picture we publish on our first page, was one of those true, faithful pastors who, though modest and retiring, accomplished so much of real value for the world. His death is a distinct loss to the whole church and has brought profound sorrow to a large circle of friends.

CANNON.--Whereas, it has pleased the Great Giver of all things to remove from earth to heaven our dearly beloved pastor, Rev. T. W. Cannon, who was one of the brightest stars in this world's constellation, one that was as spotless as it is possible for mortal man to be while in the carnal state, one whom no one knew but to love and admire, one who was always ready to help the distressed, either in body or mind. He was an ideal pastor, a loving and affectionate husband, a tender and painstaking father; in fact, he was a man after God's own heart--one whose memory we will ever cherish and whose Christian virtues we will strive to emulate. He was one that builded greater than he knew. In his death he preached a greater sermon than he did in life, for in his afflictions he never murmured. He never mentioned death, for it was not death to him. He was only passing from this world of sorrow into the realms of eternal rest, where he is now waiting and watching for the legion of loved ones whom he so tenderly and lovingly brought in touch with his pure and faithful Christian life. His daily walk was seasoned with the dews of heaven. His conversations were perfumed with the sweet incense that only comes from those who are pure in heart. Words are inadequate to express the fullness of our hearts in regard to the life and death of this pure and Godlike man; therefore b it

Resolved, 1. That we as a session have lost a kind and affectionate brother, a true and faultless moderator, and a Christlike pastor--one who was always ready and willing to throw the broad mantle of charity around a weak and erring brother.

2. That the church of which he was pastor is in deep mourning on account of the loss of their kind and faithful shepherd.

3. That the entire community is much affected by the death of this great and good man.

4. That we as a session, as a church and as a community extend to the bereaved family our sincere sympathy, and earnestly pray that the Lord will be a husband to the grief-stricken wife and a father to the children whose comfort and pleasure he so earnestly watched.

5. That we request "The Cumberland Presbyterian," The Greenfield Times, The McKenzie Herald, The Dresden Enterprise and The Carroll County Democrat to publish these resolutions, and that a copy of the same be furnished the family.--N. C. Swearingen, J. B. McAdams, J. L. Shannon, Committee.

E. M. Canon
E. M. Canon, citizen and farmer of the Twenty-first District, was born in Rutherford County, Tenn., June 1, 1826, and is one of eight children, five of whom are living, born to John and Elizabeth (Dickson) Canon. The father was born in 1791, in North Carolina, and came to Tennessee when eleven years of age, located in Rutherford County, was married, and in 1832 went to Henry County, and five years later came to Carroll County; he followed agricultural pursuits, and died January 5, 1865. The mother was born in North Carolina in 1794, and died September 1, 1874. Our subject received a good practical education in the country schools, and in the year 1849 wedded Elizabeth Hamilton, a native of Carroll County, born in 1823, and the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Hamilton. The father of Mrs. Canon was born near Nashville, Tenn., about the year 1787, in the blockhouse, which was a protection against the Indians at that early day. He came to Carroll County about 1822, and died at the advanced age of ninety years, three months and eighteen days. The mother was born in North Carolina about two years after the birth of her husband; she died when about sixty years of age. To our subject and wife were born five children: R. F., a merchant at Atwood; T. W., a Cumberland Presbyterian minister, and a resident of McKenzie; Emma E. (deceased), J. M. (deceased), and A. H., a farmer, residing with his father. In 1856 Mr. Canon located where he is now residing, on an excellent farm of 184 acres. He has been a life-long Republican in politics, and he and wife and entire family are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, of which he has been an elder for nearly thirty years.
