Now retired, Rev. O. E. White, on a visit to the Cumberland Presbyterian Center, related how he served for forty-four years in rural churches in the denomination. His ministry has been spent in Obion, former Richland, Madison, Mayfield, and Owensboro presbyteries.
The veteran minister joined the presbytery in 1925. He had come to the Center with Rev. Willard Murrie, pastor of Bethel church in the rural community in which Mr. White is spending his retirement years, near La Center, Kentucky.
Always noted for his joviality and outgoing friendliness, the short, stocky minister has maintained his enthusiasm and sparkle.
He and his wife live on a small farm which they have named "Trail's End." His hobby is gardening and he takes great pleasure in describing the new variety of sweet corn he has discovered and the tomato plant he grew that was so tall he had to get up on a ladder to pick the fruit.
He has a small tractor with which he tends his garden. He takes pride in a new planter which he is anxious to try out this spring for the first time.
But more than that, he and his wife take great pleasure in their family. They have three married daughters, eleven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Also Brother White tells of the pleasure he has had through the years of his ministry in performing the baptismal rites and marriage rites for his children. He has had the honor of baptizing his three daughters, performing the marriage ceremony for each, and has baptized all of his grandchildren except one.
That, along with touching and influencing the lives of thousands
of persons in the church, is not a bad record for a pastoral ministry.
