1851
On motion an opportunity being offered the following Brethren (viz) G. W. Jordan, A. M. Shain and William Bird came forward and gave a relation of their Experiemtnal acquaintance with religion, and their internal call to the holy work of the ministry. And the Presbytery being satisfied as to their good moral character, and their being in the communion of the church, Bro. G. W. Jordan and A. M. Shain was on motion received under the care of this Presbytery as candidates for the ministry.
Presbytery met at Dyersburg, Dyer county, Tennessee.

Whereas common fame and a written document laid before this Presbytery, charges Bro. A. M. Shain an ordained minister of this Presbytery, with the following crimes.
1st For borrowing a watch from Wm. Poindexter and afterwards representing to the public that Poindexter had made him a present of the watch and refused to return it but when compelled to do so he returned it and bad condition and acknowledge to Poindexter that it was only a lone.
2nd For claiming, and taking, a horse from Mr. Camp in 1864 and after it was proven that the horse was not his he refused to give it up; the case was arbitrated and it was decided that he pay one hundred dollars for the horse which he had not yet done.
3rd For misrepresenting Bros. Craig and Poindexter in promising to help him pay for the horse Poindexter and Graig did promise to pay five dollars each but after reflections they saw that in that act they would endorse his conduct in view of which they had an interview with Bro. Shane and by mutual consent of both parties the contract was rescinded and they agreed to pay him only for his ministerial services. He now refuses to pay ????? the horse upon the ground that they have not complied with their contract.

4th Drunkenness in two cases.
1st (Winter before last between here & Paducah. Witnesses: Taylor, Simons, James Arnold, Esqr McFarland
2nd Case last winter after Christmas at David P. Hamiltons. Witnesses: Saml Waddill, Sibba Hamilton
5th Misrepresentation generally, and making untenable assertions from the sacred desk. Witness Rev. B. Brown
Therefore resolved by this Presbytery that we have an intermediate Presbytery to meet at Pleasant Hill Church on Thursday, before the 2nd Sab. in May next at 11 O.C. AM. And that the clerk furnish Bro. Shane a copy of the foregoing charges and the names of the witnesses to sustain them. Resolved further that Bro Shane be and he is hereby, cited to attend at Pleasant Hill on Thursday before the 2nd Sab. in May next to answer said charges. And that the Clk furnish Bro Shane a copy of this citation. And that Bro T. S. Freeman be and he is hereby ordered to cite said witnesses to attend at said time and place.

Committee to deal with charges: A. E. Cooper, Felix Johnson and A. C. Wilson.
The committee appointed to investigate the charges against A. M. Shane made the following report.
We your committee after having heard the testimony upon the charges against A. M. Shane report that they do not find the first charge sustained but that Brother Shane did commit an indiscretion in stating, without proper authority, that Poindexter had made him a present of the watch .
Charge 2nd & 3rd not sustained by the testimony, but from statements made by witnesses the same things which we state above is manifest that the spirit and temper of the accused have been in an unsettled and ???? condition and his conduct marked by great indiscretions.
The 4th charge consisting of two items in the 1st not sustained as a case of absolute intoxication but of indulging in drinking frequently through the day, the 2nd case proven and confessed by the accused himself. Your committee recommend the Presbytery in interlocutory meeting, to confer with and admonish Bro. Shane as they think the case in their wisdom may demand.
On motion an interlocutory meeting, was had and Felix Johnson, D.D. appointed to admonish Bro. Shane. The admonition being given Bro. Shane acknowledges and repents having done wrong, and expressed a determination to abstain in future from the use of all intoxicating beverage and by the grace of God to guard more carefully his indiscretion and try under God to live more devoted than heretofore. And whereas Bro. Shane did in a proper spirit as to be forgiven by the Brethren for past offenses Therefore Resolved That this Presbytery does and do hereby express their confidence in the sincerity and determination of Bro. Shane and hereby express their forgiveness of the past and would recommend him to go forth in his appropriate work relying upon the grace of God to give efficiency to his labours.
