God, in His infinite wisdom, has seen fit to transplant Rev. James Russell, one of our beloved Cumberland Presbyterian ministers, from this earthly garden to His ever-green garden above. Rev. Mr. Russell was born in Graves County, Kentucky, in 1863. He was the son of Rev. Thomas S. Russell.
As a minister in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, he held many pastorates in Kentucky, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Missouri. In 1911 he came to Sedalia. Through his efforts the church at Seventeenth and Harrison was built. He devoted many years, when a young minister, in preaching and teaching to the hill folks in Kentucky and Tennessee. He endured many hardships that the Word of God should be preached and souls saved.
His wife preceded him in death December 4, 1937. Surviving him are the following children: Mrs. H. Rogers, Mrs. Dowdy and Ben Russell, all of Sedalia, Mo.; and Mrs. Albert Zimmerechied, New Florence, Mo.; also two brothers, two sisters, 17 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and a host of friends, to mourn his passing.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Carl C. Durbin, Marshall, Mo., and Rev. Earl Brummett, pastor Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Sedalia. Music was in charge of Rev. Ralph Emmerson Hurd, pastor of the Epworth M. E. Church. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Rev. Mr. Russell had been a patient sufferer for about 20 years. He preached many times when he was not able to do so. He often said, "I can't find a place to quit." His duties he faithfully performed until death. His heart ever yearned for lost souls. In behalf of the Cumberland churches he has served in McGee Presbytery, may I extend sincere, heart-felt sympathy to the bereaved family, and commend them to the tender mercy and love of the Heavenly Father Who alone can supply balm that will heal their crushed and broken hearts.
Mrs. Ike Haines.
