KELLEY.--Rev. Marcellus Jones Kelley
was born in Kentucky, June 22, 1828; when he was quite small his
parents moved to Hardeman county, Tenn., where the subject of
this sketch grew up to manhood, professed religion, and joined
the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was licensed to preach
by Madison Presbytery when about eighteen years of age; he was
set apart to the whole work of the ministry before he was twenty-one
years old by the same Presbytery that licensed him. He was educated
at Bethel
college, and studied theology with Dr.
Burrow. He was a man of high culture, and an able, efficient,
and successful preacher. For the last quarter of a century he
has lived in Texas, where his labors have been abundantly blessed.
During his entire ministry he as never without a charge. He died
at his home near Henderson, Texas, Nov. 12, 1883. All that could
be done by the very best physicians and kind neighbors and friends
was brought into requisition to prolong his life. His affectionate
wife was by his side nearly two weeks to soothe and comfort, but
all could not keep him from dying. The Master that he served so
long and so faithfully said, "It is enough," and took
him to be with himself forever. The large concourse of people
that attended his funeral and the tears that fell from so many
eyes showed unmistakably the high esteem in which he was held.
