Dysart.--July 2, 1885, at his home near Clarksville,
Red River County, Texas, the Rev. Johnston Dysart. He was seventy-two
years of age the 25th of June prior to his death. He had been
a tower of strength in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church half
a century. He died in the faith of the gospel he had so long and
so faithfully preached. Brother Dysart was of Methodist parentage;
born in Missouri; was educated at Center College, Danville, Ky.;
was brought into the ministry by Logan
Presbytery. The first sermon he ever heard preached by
a Cumberland Presbyterian was by the lamented Dr.
H. S. Porter, which attracted his attention to the doctrines
and teachings of this Church, and upon investigation decided upon
this as the Church of his choice. He started alone a distance
on one hundred and fifty miles to Presbytery, without knowing
a preacher or a member of the Church. When within eighty miles
of the place he fell in with the Rev. J. Y. Malone and the Rev.
M. C. Rowland, made their acquaintance, and from that day they
were warm personal friends and true yoke-fellows in the great
work of the gospel ministry, for Brother Dysart was received under
the care of Presbytery, and in due time was licensed and set apart
to the whole work of the ministry. These three brethren now sleep
in Texas soil. For more than twenty years he was one of the most
efficient laborers and successful preachers in Logan
Presbytery. The last thirty years of his life were spent
in Texas, where his labors were blessed abundantly. He organized
several Churches, and had the elegant Cumberland Presbyterian
church edifice erected in Clarksville. Brother Dysart was a very
fine preacher. He was one of the most accurate speakers, one of
the standard theologians of the Church, and one of the best presbyters
of the age. He raised and educated a most respectable family of
children, all of whom are members of his own Church except the
youngest. His eldest son, educated at Trinity
University, is one of the most zealous, energetic, and
useful young preachers of Texas, and being thoroughly consecrated
to his work, bids fair to be one of prominence in the Church.
Those present at the meeting of Texas
Synod in the fall of 1882, at Clarksville, Texas, will
scarcely forget the part borne by Brother Dysart in the memorial
service of Dr.
Beeson, who had died a few weeks before. Texas was in
mourning for her fallen prince. Brother Dysart bore testimony
to the worth of this good and great man. He was pastor of the
Church when Brother
Beeson became a member, received him into the Church,
and assisted in bringing him into the ministry. The intimacy that
existed between them was of the most affectionate nature. His
forcible and impressive talk on this occasion bespoke the depth
of his feeling for a true friend and brother. Brother Dysart had
for years been a great sufferer. He was troubled with asthma,
but bore it with that fortitude and Christian forbearance characteristic
of the man. He died in great peace. W.
G. L. Quaite.
