Dunlap.--The Rev. Robert R. Dunlap returned his commission
to the Head of the Church after having borne it over forty years
without the least stain upon it. he was born in Humphreys County,
Tenn., Nov. 5, 1818. his parents were pious, and raised him in
the path of rectitude. He studied the Catechism, and could answer
all the questions when he was a small boy. He professed religion
and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Hall's
Creek Camp-ground in 1842. He was received under the care
of Nashville
Presbytery, now Charlotte,
at White's Creek, in 1843. He was licensed at Charlotte, Dickson
County, Tenn., 1844. He was ordained at Vernon Camp-ground, Hickman
County, 1845. He preached successfully and to the entire satisfaction
of his Presbytery and the Church several years where he was raised.
he moved to Texas in the fall of 1852, and settled in McKinney,
and a year later moved to the southern part of Collin County.
He was the first Cumberland Presbyterian preacher that settled
in that county. he remained there several years; preached a great
deal; organized a number of Churches. He, with two other brethren,
organized White
Rock Presbytery. The wife of his youth died Jan., 1859.
She was a most estimable lady, the daughter of the Rev. James
Parker, of the M. E. Church, South, a man of high character. After
the death of his wife, he missionated on the Western frontier
of Texas several years, where his labors were wonderfully blessed.
He saw the pleasure of the Lord prospering through his instrumentality.
Numbers of Churches were organized, and the writer knows of no
place where Cumberland Presbyterianism is more prosperous than
it is there. He was married the second time to Miss Mary Lou
Williams, Oct. 13, 1868, daughter of the Rev. W. A. Williams,
a lady of great worth, eminently qualified to fill the position
of a minister's wife. Their only child, Robert, says he wants
to be a good man like papa. Sister Dunlap asks the prayers of
her Christian friends for herself and her little son. The last
twenty of his life were devoted to pastoral work. During those
years, he was the regular pastor of the Church at Ladonia, Dodd
City, and Bethlehem--all in Fannin County, Texas. Half of his
time was devoted to the Ladonia Church, one-fourth to Dodd City,
and a fourth to Bethlehem. As a pastor, he had very few if any
superiors. Those congregations have excellent houses of worship
of their own, all paid for. Scarcely a year passed without a revival
of religion in each congregation. They never failed to take up
the quarterly collections recommended by the General Assembly,
and they were always creditable. There never was a jar between
his congelation and himself; whatever he suggested they approved.
One of the elders, Brother Redner, remarked to the writer that
the people of Ladonia could not get along without Brother Dunlap.
A member of high standing of the M. E. Church, South, said if
Sam Jones had an appointment to preach in the Methodist Church
in Ladonia, and Brother Dunlap had an appointment in the Cumberland
Presbyterian Church at the same hour, he would go to hear the
man preach who had so faithfully stood before the same people
twenty years. For fourteen months he had been in poor health.
He had a stroke of paralysis from which he never entirely recovered.
He preached on Sunday, conducted service on Thanksgiving-day,
attended to business until five hours before his death. he bore
his afflictions with Christian fortitude. The last letter I received
from him stated that his health had been feeble for several months.
he said that he had been thinking for sometime that his labors
on earth were well-nigh done, and he did not feel to regret that
his toils were nearly over. He spoke also of the interest he felt
in his little family. he died Nov. 28, at 11 o'clock P.M.,
1885. Brother Dunlap was a loyal son of the Church, and prompt
in attending the Church courts. He was a model gentleman, an able
minister of Jesus Christ, an excellent citizen, a good neighbor,
a kind husband, and an affectionate father. May his mantle fall
on dear little Robert.

Obituary of first wife - Permelia Hubbard Dunlap
Mrs. Permelia Hubbard Dunlap.
Wife of
Rev. R. R. Dunlap, and daughter of Rev. James Parker, departed
this life at the residence of her husband, in Collin county, Texas,
on the 21st of January, 1859, after a protracted confinement to
her room for several months.
Sister Dunlap was born in Humphreys county, Tenn. on the 14th of February, 1821, and professed religion on the 22d of August, 1839, joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, married Rev. R. R. Dunlap the 14th of February, 1841, and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in the fall of 1843, in which she lived a consistent member until her decease.
Sister Dunlap has left a kind husband , one son and daughter,
together with relatives and friends to mourn her loss. Though
we sorrow as those that have no hope, for the apostle says, right
blessed are the dead that died in the Lord, yea sayeth the Spirit,
for they shall rest from their labors, and their works do follow
them.
W.
A. Williams.
