Jane Brown died in Maury Co., Tenn., June 3, in the 91st year of her age. She was born June 22, 1740. Her husband James Brown was murdered by the Cherokee Indians, May 9, 1788, and she and 5 children made prisoners. Her husband, in company with Colonels John and Daniel Gillespie, her brothers, led a company of soldiers at the Battle of Guilford Court House, during the Revolution. In 1792 she settled with her son, Col. Joseph Brown, near Nashville, Tennessee. (The National Intelligencier, 28 June, 1831). Jane Gillespie Brown's brother Daniel Gillespie was a major in the Continental Army and a colonel in the North Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War. He was a member of the House of Commons in 1779 and 1789. Jane and Daniel's brother John Gillespie was a colonel in the Revolution. The Gillespies were staunch Presbyterians. John's son James S. Gillespie was the first president of the University of North Carolina and was married to Frances "Fannie" Henderson, who was reportedly the first white child born in Kentucky to parents married in Kentucky. Her parents were Samuel and Elizabeth "Betsey" Calloway Henderson. Jane Gillespie Brown and her brothers Daniel and John Gillespie had an uncle Reverend George Gillespie, who was the great-grandfather of Jane Knox, the mother of President James Knox Polk.
