Obituary of Sarah Florence Lashbrooks Bowmer

Mrs. B. E. Bowmer, Texas

Funeral services for Mrs. B. E. Bowmer, who passed away at her home in Hubbard, Texas, January 13, 1949, were held at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. L. C. Kerans, pastor of the church, conducted the services and was assisted by Rev. O. N. Baucom, of Hillsboro, former pastor of the local church, and Rev. G. L. Waddle, of Midlothian, and Rev. N. A. Woychuk, of Shreveport, La., and former pastor of the Dawson Church. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery.

Mrs. Bowmer was the youngest daughter of Sarah and Elisah Brooks and was also the youngest child of a family of seven brothers and sisters, all of whom preceded her in death. Her parents came to Texas in the early pioneer days and settled in Burnet County, then the frontier of Texas which was still troubled with hostile Indians. She was born near Burnet, April 22, 1860. She was married to Rev. B. E. Bowmer, at Burnet, Texas, August 5, 1881. Mr. Bowmer at that time was a frontier evangelist of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and it was under his ministry that Mrs. Bowmer was converted and later became his wife and the mother of six children, all of whom survive her and were present with the exception of the youngest daughter, Mrs. Laverne Coleman of Gallup, N.M. The children are; Mrs. Minnie Kemp, of Cameron, Ed I. Bowmer, of Hubbard, Mrs. Della Story of Wichita Falls, S. S. Bowmer of Hubbard, Dallas Bowmer of Dallas, and Mrs. Coleman.

Her husband preceded her in death four years ago. Rev. and Mrs. Bowmer made their home in Burnet for several years, later moving to San Angelo and in 1907 came to Hubbard, where they have since resided with the exception of three years spent in Marshall, where Mr. Bowmer did pastoral and missionary work.

In the passing of Mrs. Bowmer and her companion, who preceded her in death, we have an outstanding example of faith which enabled them to live courageously the life of frontier missionaries and serve their church and state in a most exemplary manner.
