Brother Bell died in his sixtieth year. His ministry began in early life. His comraades and teachers were the members of the Tennessee Presbytery, in the days when Robert Donnell and Dr. Felix Johnson were members of that Presbytery.
Dr. Johnson and brother Bell labored together in many a meeting, and there grew up between them a friendship which no length of absence could destroy. I have often heard Dr. Johnson talk about these meetings in which he and Bell labored together.
It was my own privilege also to labor with brother Bell in many a meeting. Ties were formed in the midst of great works of grace, which even death cannot sever. He was a noble worker in revivals. I am not as old a man as brother Bell was when he died, but the overwhelming majority of my early and life long companions and associates in the ministry, and in protracted and revival meetings, have already gone home. Brother Bell was a successful pastor.
The war uprooted him from his old home in South Alabama, where he had so long and nobly labored for Jesus. When a preacher past middle life "pulls up stakes," the chances for him to be permanently located in a pastorate, are very poor. Brother Bell, however, worked on faithfully in such field of labor as the Lord opened up, until the summons came for him to go home and rest.
I have often thought that he and Ransom were the kind of metal that martyrs were made out of. Uncompromising adherents to their conviction of right, without ever stopping to ask or care what personal loss they might suffer from following out their convictions.
I had many a sweet conference with brother Bell last summer.
He talked much about the interests of Christ's kingdom, while
streams of tears flowed down is cheeks. He told me of his personal
trials and struggles, too; but they were much nearer their everlasting
termination than he or I either dreamed of then. One of his dear
daughters wrote me full particulars of his last hours. They were
just what we would expect from God's servant. "I want God's
own will done," was the spirit in which he left his earthly
home, his wife, and his children, and went away to serve God on
some far wider and higher arena.
