McClurkan.--May 6, 1905, at his home near Poetry, Texas, Rev.
John McClurkan answered the summons from above. He was born in
Pittsburg, Pa., June 28, 1836. When he was three years old his
parents moved to Tennessee; at twelve years of age, his mother
having died, he went back to Pennsylvania and lived with a relative
until eighteen years of age, when he returned to Tennessee. He
joined Charlotte
Presbytery at Union, Humphreys County, Tenn., in 1859.
He often spoke of the brethren with whom he labored in the early
years of his ministry, and just before the end came remarked,
"I am the last of the old men of my presbytery." He
married Miss C. L. Patey, of Dickson County, Tennessee.
This union gave to the world a band of Christian workers almost
unexcelled, taken as a family--five boys and five girls. Two of
the boys are ministers, Rev.
W. H. McClurkan, of Davis, Ind. Ter., and Rev.
J. O. McClurkan, of Nashville, Tenn. He came to Texas
some years ago and occupied his time preaching and teaching school.
After the death of his wife he spent some time in California,
returning to Texas he Married Mrs. Lizzie McNutt, of Kaufman
County, who survives him. He had not been able to engage actively
in the work of the ministry for several years and on Sunday, May
7, we laid his body to rest in the old Campground cemetery. The
writer preached the sermon from Acts 11: 24, at 10 a.m., the funeral
services taking the place of the regular services. Physically,
Bro. McClurkan was never a strong man, still he did a great deal
of work and much good ere the summons came. A good man, indeed,
has laid down the cross of life for the eternal crown above, and
we miss him. Miss him in the church, for he was a safe counselor
and an earnest worker; miss him in the congregation, for his presence
was a benediction; miss him in the community, for he was a good
neighbor, and truly is there a vacant chair in the home. He has
left to the sorrowing ones, yea, to every one who came under his
influence, a rich legacy, for his life, yes, and his death, was
a triumph for the Christian religion. To his last message, "Tell
them to remember what I said unto them while yet I was with them;
might have been added, 'Follow me as I have followed Christ.'"
--C. G. Wright.
