Was born near Elizabethtown, Ill., September 4, 1859; died March 3, 1940, at the age of 80 years, 5 months and 29 days. He was the son of James A. and Carolina Smith Hill.

On September 13, 1880, he was married to Sarah Elizabeth Rogers of Carbondale. To this union were born one daughter, Mrs. Alberta Thomas, and two sons, James Calvin Hill and Robert Vernon Hill, all of Marion, Ill.

He was converted in 1880, and in August, 1881, joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Pleasant Hill. In October, 1887, he was united with the Illinois Presbytery, being ordained to the ministry in 1890. He believed deeply in John 1: 16.

He served the Master for 53 years. During this time he was pastor of twenty churches, the time of his pastorates ranging from one to sixteen years. He held many revivals in different states in which hundreds of souls were converted, many of whom are still living., He gave all the honor of the good done by him to the Lord by Whose grace he was able to carry on his work. He was loved and honored by all who knew him.

Besides his children, he leaves to survive him five granddaughers: Grace and Merle Thomas, Irma Wolfe, Noma Vee Hill, Mrs. Beulah Johnson; four grandsons: Robert Vernon, Jr., Evan Louis, Wayne Noe Hill, and Frank Hill; also two great-grandsons: John Edward Wolfe and Ronald Gene Hill. He also leaves two sisters: Mrs. Alice Carr and Mrs. Anzie Edmundson. Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death. Many nieces and nephews, relatives, and friends are left to mourn his going.

Short services were conducted in the home at Marion, Ill., by Rev. Mr. Wheeler, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Marion. His funeral was conducted in the First Baptist Church, Anna, Ill, by Rev. L. A. Earnhart, assisted by Rev. L. C. Kesler, in the presence of a host of relatives and friends. Interment was in the Anna Cemetery.

The deceased was a former resident of Union County for many years, and pastored Ebenezer, Union, and Mt. Zion churches. His many friends mourn his passing.
