A written petition from the congregations of Spring Creek, McAdow and Clarksville praying the ordination of Finis Ewing, in whose circuit these congregations are included. Considering the petition of those congregations and particularly because of the large circuit and many young societies earnestly desiring and really needing the administrations of the sealing ordinances amongst them presbytery agrees that Mr. Ewing be ordained on the friday before the third Sabbath in November next. Ordered that Messrs. McGready, McGee, Haw and McAdow, attend as members of that presbytery. After close inquiry and mature deliberation the vote was put whether the defendant was guilty or not guilty of the first article of the charge. He was acquitted. On the second article of the charge he was likewise acquitted. The vote being put on the third charge guilty or not guilty he was voted guilty. The judgment of the presbytery is that the defendant be suspended from the public exercise of his ministerial office until he professes sorrow for his past conduct and promises amendment.
The presbytery adjudges also that the prosecutor acknowledge his fault in failing to prove the first two charges and that he submit to a reproof from the moderator.
The presbytery with gratitude to the great head of the church records that upon reading the judgment to the prosecutor and the defendant, they both submitted to the judgment, gave full satisfaction to presbytery and were cordially received to their former standing. [A matter, concerning Rev. Jas. McGready and a house and a house and lot in Russellville, Ky., was referred to the Synod of Kentucky, and is omitted here.]
Whereas we are credibly informed that the Rev. James McGready, William Hodge, William McGee and John Rankin persist in encouraging and in holding Christian and ministerial communion with those young men declared by the Commission of Synod to be destitute of any authority to administer sealing ordinances, preach or exhort in the Presbyterian Church, notwithstanding the fact that said young men neglect said declaration, Therefore be it Resolved, That it is the duty of this Presbytery to report the same to the Synod. Resolved that Mr. Donnell write to Rev. Jacob Lake informing him when and where the next stated session of Presbytery will meet and that they expect his attendance.
Presbytery adjourned to meet at Smyrna on the first Tuesday
of April next, 1807. Concluded with prayer.
Terah
Templin, Moderator.
The Presbytery of Transylvania, formed by the Synod of Virginia, included the district of Kentucky and the settlements on the Cumberland River, extending into what is now Tennessee, and held its first meeting in the Court House at Danville, Oct. 17, 1786.
The Synod of Kentucky, formed by the General Assembly in 1802, included three Presbyteries; Transylvania, embracing the territory south and west of the Kentucky River; West Lexington, embracing the territory between the Kentucky and the Licking Rivers; and Washington, embracing the territory between the Licking main branch and the Ohio River and reaching into what is now the State of Ohio.
The Cumberland Presbytery, formed at the first meeting of the Synod, was dissolved in 1806.
The Cumberland Presbytery re-established and the beginning of the Cumberland Presbyterian church, was formed in 1810.
The minutes of the Original Presbytery kept in a crude copy
book, are now published as a compliment to our Cumberland brethren
and a contribution to the history of this critical period. The
justification claimed by the Cumberland Church seemed to be an
attempt to supply the demands for the Gospel in a section overrun
by worldliness and French infidelity, with young men possessing
gifts as exhorters, notwithstanding the fact that they were unequipped
by college or theological training and also, notwithstanding the
irregularities of the Great Revival, as a plea for experimental
religion.
