Minnie James Hollingsworth Sanders

Cumberland Presbyterian Minister

1893 - 1965

WOMAN MINISTER DIES IN ILLINOIS

Rev. Mrs. Minnie Sanders, who served for 47 years as a minister in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, died February 8 in Georgetown, Illinois. Most of her ministry has been spent serving the Cumberland Presbyterian church in Georgetown.

Surviving are her husband, Russell Sanders; three step-daughters, a half-sister, and three half-brothers, four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held by Rev. Stanton Lawyer of Charleston, Ill., assisted by Rev. Roy McMahon. The ministers of Foster Presbytery in which she held membership, served as honorary pall-bearers.

She was 72.

Mrs. Sanders was one of the pioneer women preachers of the church and often had to face many opponents who were strongly against women being ministers.

During her ministry in Georgetown she has been a pastor to many people of the community who were not members of the church. This is reflected in the fact that she conducted more than 4,000 funerals.

Mrs. Sanders was featured in a news story last year and also a feature story appeared in THE CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN on her retirement from the ministry after 47 years of service.

In the story that was carried in THE CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN, Mrs. Sanders was quoted on her view of the present situation of the world:

"As to the present status of the world, it appears to me that the bad is getting worse and the good is getting better; but it finally boils down to the individual, and each one of us has to face God alone and on his own merits. With his wonderful X-ray eyes, he really knows who are his and who are not."
