"An
opportunity was given for persons to converse with the Presbytery
in reference to an internal call to the work of the gospel ministry,
whereupon W.
H. McLeskey, of the Rives congregation, and J. C. Reid,
of the Troy congregation, came forward, and after relating their
experiences, they were received under the care of the Presbytery
as candidates for the ministry and texts assigned them from which
to prepare discourses to be read before the Presbytery, viz: W.
H. McLeskey, Rom. 6:23; J. C. Reid, Phill. I:21."
"Your Committee on Examination submit report No. 1. Bro.
J. C. Reid, who placed himself under your care, is well up
on literature and is in charge of the school at Troy, Tennessee.
You committee are satisfied as to his ability, and having learned
that he desires ministerial work, we sought an interview with
him and are satisfied of the expediency. Your committee suggested
to him to write a discourse on some subject, and he prepared a
short sermon on the text assigned to him on yesterday and submitted
it to us, and we being satisfied with his attainments and his
competency to teach, we recommend that the Presbytery proceed
to license him to preach."
...
"The
Moderator proceeded to the licensing of Bro J. C. Reid."
