Read.--The Rev. Columbus Lafayette Read was born June
11, 1833, in Butler County, Ky., and died April 18, 1885, in the
same county. He was the son of James B. and Jemima C. Read. His
mother's maiden name was Askew. He was the grandson of Robert
and Sarah C. Read. His ancestors came from Virginia, and settle
in Butler County, Ky., many years ago. Two of his uncles--the
Revs. H.
C. and R.
A. Read--were preachers; also one cousin--the Rev. E.
M. Read [sic: Rev.
M. E. Reid]. His family on his mother's side were Old
School Presbyterians. At the age of thirteen years he made a profession
of faith in Christ, at Salem Church, in a union meeting held by
Wilson T. Martin, of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and the
Rev. J. F. Austin, of the Baptist Church. Soon after his profession
he joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Point Pleasant,
then in charge of the Rev. W. T. Martin. He was married to Miss
Mary A. Taylor, October 10, 1854. His health had been declining
for some weeks, and a very short time before his death he had
a stroke of paralysis which soon carried him off. Some time after
his marriage he felt it his duty to preach, and at a meeting of
Logan
Presbytery, at Trinity Church, Warren County, Ky., April,
1861, he was received as a candidate for the ministry. April 4,
1864, at Lebanon Church, Butler County, he was licensed to preach.
April 5, 1869, at Mt. Olivet Church, he was ordained to the whole
work of the ministry. His work as a preacher was confined almost
entirely to the community in which he lived. He was a close reasoner,
and a better preacher than the world ever gave him credit for.
He is now in his peaceful home.
M. M. SMITH.
