James Brigham McCarroll

Cumberland Presbyterian Minister

1824 - 1884

THE REV. J. B. McCARROLL.

Rev. Frank Pollock.

The subject of this sketch was born June 24, 1824, in Stewart County, Tennessee; was converted and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1842, and united with Charlotte Presbytery, as a candidate for the ministry, in 1852. In 1860 he came to Missouri, and settled near the little hamlet of Castorville, on the Castor River, in Stoddard County, where he lived till the time of his departure. He married Mary Bloys, of Stoddard County, and she has been a faithful companion to him in all his labors and trials, and still survives him as the mother of three sons and five daughters, all of whom are unmarried and at home.

Brother McCarroll joined West Prairie Presbytery shortly after his coming to Missouri, and has been a member thereof for more than twenty years. He was a man of strong convictions, and had the courage to avow them. He was faithful to the trust reposed in him, being ardently devoted to the cause of Christ and to the Church of his choice, which he believed to be the grandest on earth.

Though his voice and manner in the pulpit and in Presbytery frequently left the impression on some of his brethren that he was unkind to them, yet he really was not, for underneath a seemingly rough exterior there throbbed a warm, sincere, and noble heart. Though he often took the shortest route to show men their faults and sins, yet it was for their good; and if he saw that he had wounded the feelings of a brother, it is believed that none regretted it more than he, and he was willing to make due reparation. He was a good Presbyter, well understanding our Church-polity, and was safe in counsel, and a vigilant, guardian of the interests of our beloved Zion.

During his last illness his mind was very much occupied with eternal things, and as he approached the end of his earthly career, on the evening of the 20th of February, he said to his wife: "It is growing dark; but it is light in heaven." His last words were joyous and triumphant. Lifting his emaciated hands, while a smile of ecstacy lighted up his face, he exclaimed, as in a vision of his Redeemer, "O, sweet Jesus!" and gently folding his hands upon his breast, he serenely passed into the embrace of his glorified Lord.
