Samuel Rufus King

1847 - 1924

Cumberland Presbyterian Minister

S. R. KING

Samuel Rufus King was born in Johnson County, Missouri, March 30, 1847. On September 17, 1873, he was married to Miss Mary Burrow. To this union were born eight children, two sons and six daughters. One son and one daughter preceded their father to their reward.

Brother King was converted at about the age of 28, and soon thereafter united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Brother King did not enter the ministry for a number of years afterward.

He departed this life March 25, 1924.

He was a grandson of Samuel King, one of the founders of our Church.

It was not my privilege to ever meet Brother King. I was on my way home from one of my appointments and stopped over at San Angelo, the day of his death.

I would say to the weeping family that the Master alone can comfort in times like this.

During his earthly pilgrimage he wept and comforted those in distress, and he is an ever-present comforter today for us.

Grandmother, may the Lord be a stay to you in this hour of distress.

The funeral service was held in San Angelo, and the remains were placed in the city cemetery there.

Mrs. Mollie King

Mrs. Mollie King died October 20, 1927 at Sherwood, Tex., at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G. C. Powell, with whom she had made her home since the death of her husband, Rev. S. R. King. She professed religion and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in early life, where she remained steadfast until her death. She was married to S. R. King, September 17, 1872. To this union were born eight children, two boys and six girls, two of which preceded their parents to the better land.

Sister King was Miss Mollie Burrow; a great-granddaughter of Reuben Burrow. Brother King was a lineal descendant of Rev. Samuel King, one of the founders of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Thus in the passing of these two, the Cumberland Presbyterian Church loses the last remnant of these two noted families, whose life and character are interwoven with the history of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Sister King was truly a sainted mother and Christian. She was a very sweet-spirited woman, being loved by all who knew her. She was a college graduate, and a very intelligent woman; well versed in the doctrines of the church and a fine conversationalist. She loved her church and her church paper.

The writer spent many hours with this interesting woman, talking over the affairs of the Church in which she was so deeply interested.

Our last conversation was about the Spirit realm and the grandeur and blissfulness of the intermediate state.

She was laid to rest in Fairmont Cemetery, San Angelo, Texas, where her dust will sleep until awakened by the trumpet of God on the morning of the resurrection.
