OBITUARY - Silas Monroe Johnson

Died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M(artha). V(ictoria). Wall, near St. Clair, on Wednesday, June 24, 1896, Rev. S(ilas). M(onroe). Johnson, aged 74 years, 2 months and 25 days.

Deceased was born in Kentucky, March 30, 1822. In the early forties, he emigrated to Illinois, where he remained a short time and then removed to Franklin County, Mo. In 1849, when the California fever swept over the country, he in company with several of his neighbors went overland to that far off land. Poor health soon admonished him to return to Missouri.

Returning here, he married Miss Hetty Ann Kerr and settled down to the life of a farmer and reared a large family. In 1852, he joined the ministry and continued preaching until feeble health forbade, which was but a short time ago. While he was an untiring and faithful worker in the Cumberland Presbyterian church, he lent a helping hand to all that had a tendency to draw his fellow men to Christ and for the uplifting of humanity. He was a long and faithful worker in the Sabbath school, and was for many years superintendent of the school near his home. He was laid to rest in the Dry Branch cemetery on the 25th (June) in the presence of many sorrowing relatives and friends who now mourn the loss of a dear father, a faithful friend and a good neighbor.
A FRIEND.

Note: All records, including church and census records, indicate he was born in Illinois. Church records show he came to Franklin County in 1836, when he would have been 14 years of age. Also, he was married in 1846 to Frances Jane Shirley and they had one son, William Austin Johnson - my grandfather. Frances died in 1848 when her son was 5 days old.

R. P. Johnson, Well-Known Citizen, Dies
Russell Perry Johnson was born September 30, 1863, at Anaconda, Franklin County, Missouri and departed this life at his home in Sullivan February 20, 1934 at 11:25 p. m., at the age of 70 years, 4 months, 30 days. He had been in feeble health for several years but the final cause of death was an infection of the throat.Mr. Johnson was the son of S. M. Johnson, one of. the earliest pioneers in the Anaconda neighborhood. In 1890 Mr. Johnson was married to Ida M. Richardson and to this union three children were born, one son and two daughters. The son died when five years old and the elder daughter, Lena, died when about nineteen (from Tuberculosis). The younger daughter, Ora, now Mrs. Carol Beeler, survives, together with her mother. Mr. Johnson is also survived by one brother and two sisters, A. W. Johnson of St. Louis, Mrs. Mary J. Grant of Deport, Texas and Mrs. Clara Peterson of Sullivan, Missouri. Funeral to be Friday The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church and burial will be made in the Odd Fellow Cemetery. Mr. Johnson came to Sullivan from Anaconda in 1907, erected a commodious home and identified himself with all the activities of town. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church for many years and was assistant superintendent of the Sunday school the past ten years or more. He was a remarkably good singer of the old Christian Harmony songs and for several years was secretary of the Old Time Singing Association that meets annually at Bourbon. For a good many years he was one of the most faithful members of the Odd Fellow Lodge at Sullivan and burial will be made with the rites of that order. In Mercantile Business After coming to Sullivan, Mr. Johnson bought considerable real estate and erected some residence buildings besides his own home, doing much of the carpenter work himself. He then engaged in the mercantile business in partnership with Mr. S. P. Hansel and was so occupied for about five years. Afterward he assisted other merchants in town as special clerk for various periods at various times. He made friends with everyone and his services were in constant demand until his health failed. It can be truthfully said that no one in Sullivan stood higher in public estimation than did Perry Johnson. The entire community is deeply saddened at his death and sincere sympathy is extended to his sorely bereaved wife and daughter and other relatives.

Through the Garden of God, so fair,
He has gathered them all, those broken links,
We shall find her waiting there."
