"The
Presbytery by motion and second offered an opportunity for anyone
who might wish to converse with the Presbytery in regard to an
internal call to the work of the Gospel ministry, whereupon Bro.
E. S. Hicks of Mt. Zion congregation presented himself and conversed
with Presbytery, after which he was by motion and second received
as a candidate for the ministry and his name was ordered enrolled
among the candidates. A song was sung and a general hand-shake
indulged in."

We thank God that he is filling the
ranks of the Ministry by such young men as Brother E. S. Hicks,
whom we have the pleasure of receiving as a candidate during this
sitting Presbytery. . . Third, that Brother E. S. Hicks enter
school at as early a date as possible."

1913
"The
hour of Special Order as called for in the report of the Committee
on Literature and Theology, to-wit, the licensure of Candidate
E. S. Hicks, having arrived, same was held, presided over by the
Rev. J. V. King, at the conclusion of which the name of E. S.
Hicks was ordered enrolled among the licentiates of this Presbytery."

1914
"The
hour of special order, to-wit: The ordination of Licentiate E.
S. Hicks having arrived, the service was held as provided for
in the report of the Committee on Literature and Theology.
The sermon was preach as called for from Acts 20:27.
'For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the council of
God.' After which Brother E. S. Hicks was set apart by prayer
and the laying on of hands of the Presbytery, to the whole work
of the Gospel Ministry, and the name of Rev. E. S. Hicks was by
instructions placed among the list of Ordained Ministers."

Rev. E. Samuel Hicks
Mayfield
Presbytery
Rev. E. Samuel Hicks, retired
Cumberland Presbyterian minister and well-known resident of Fulton,
Ky., died recently after a long illness. He was 82.
Rev. Hicks was ordained to the ministry in 1916 and had been pastor of a number of Cumberland Presbyterian churches in Western Kentucky and Tennessee. He was a member of Mayfield Presbytery. Funeral services were held at the Mt. Zion Church, Water Valley, Ky., with Rev. L. E. McCoy of Hubbard, Texas officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Zion cemetery.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. A. H. Morgan
and Mrs. John E. Kirksey, both of Paducah; a son, James Hicks,
Memphis; 13 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
