& 25, 1887 - Tennessee Presbytery - Fayetteville, Tennessee
On motion the following committee was appointed to
arrange for the memorial service of our lamented Brother James
Campbell to take place Monday morning at 11 o'clock: Revs. W.
J. Walker, J. B. Tigert and Elder Wm. Douglass.
The
following report was read and adopted: Your Committee on Memorial
Service on the death of Rev. James Campbell do most solemnly realize
that we have lost an affectionate brother, a genial companion
and a faithful co-laborer in the gospel ministry. We recommend
that the memorial service be conducted by the Rev. D. Tucker;
after which Brethren Mitchell, Waterson and Tigert will participate.
The time having arrived for the memorial service of
our lamented father and brother the Rev. James Campbell; Rev.
D. Tucker, appointed to conduct the service, read a short biographical
sketch of his life and read an impressive lesson from the 34 Psalm.
The congregation joined in singing the hymn, "Servant of
God Well Done." The congregation was then led in prayer by
Brother Tucker after which made some appropriate remarks upon
the ministerial life and Christian labors of Brother Campbell,
followed by appropriate songs and remarks from several members
of Presbytery. The service was closed with prayer by Rev. W. J.
Walker and song "We Will All Gather Home in the morning."

Campbell.--Another watchman has laid down his armor.
The Rev. James Campbell died at his nephew's in Franklin county
on Tuesday, the 18th inst. He had been a member of the Tennessee
Presbytery for more than forty years. He was licensed
and ordained by it, and retained his fellowship with it until
his death. Truly a good man in Israel has fallen. Brother Campbell
was earnest and consecrated to the Master's service. Eternity
alone will reveal the good he has accomplished. He entered the
ministry under the most unfavorable surroundings--advanced in
life, a man of a family, without the rudiments of an education,
and very poor withal--but he possessed an element of great power,
and one that usually brings success, his untiring energy, the
result of will power, which he possessed in an eminent degree;
the word fail was not in his vocabulary. We, as a presbytery,
will miss him, for he was a faithful one among us, but his loss
we will not deplore for the Master called for him.
W.
B. WATTERSON.
