Recent Deaths in Ewing Presbytery

The death angel has taken from the ranks of Ewing Presbytery of Arkansas Synod two of its ministers and an elder since the first of May. Elder John A. Pless was the first to go. His body was laid to rest in the New Hope Church Cemetery on May 4. He was for a number of years the efficient clerk of Ewing Presbytery.

The next to be taken was Rev. J. W. Alford, whose work and influence cannot be limited. His funeral service was held in Piney Church in the presence of a very large number of people. The body was laid to rest on May 9.

The body of Pvt. Charles Parker, a grandson of Dr. Campbell (deceased), was laid to rest in the Dover Cemetery on May 21.

The last one to go was Rev. R. B. Roach, who peacefully passed away. His funeral service was held in the Russellville Church on June 22, after which his body was laid to rest in the Ozark Cemetery.

The writer's acquaintance with these persons was short, but each of them left something valuable to his Christian life. Christ was magnified in their bodies in life and in death.

They have gone from among us but they will never be forgotten by any of us. They were faithful over a few things.--A. D. Rudolph.

Mrs. J. W. Alford, widow of the Rev. J. W. Alford ask that presbytery recommend her as a beneficiary of the Board of Ministerial Relief. This was referred to the committee on Ministerial Relief.

The Joint Memorial Service for deceased ministers, elders, and auxiliary members was held at this time.
Rev. A. D. Rudolph had charge of the service in which the following were honored; Rev. R. B. Roach, Rev. J. W. Alford both retired, Elder C. P. Spainhour of Shiloh Congregation and Elder Jno. A. Pless of New Hope Congregation. Mr. Pless was Stated Clerk of the Presbytery--serving continuously for forty years and an honorary member of the Mary E. Pless Auxiliary of New Hope Congregation. Rev. Rudolph read 3 John 111-8, "For His name's sake they went forth" was used as the basis for the message, which was very appropriate and much appreciated by the presbytery.
The service was closed with prayer by Elder C. C. Wait.

The report of the committee on Ministerial Relief was concurred in and the recommendations adopted.
We recommend that Mrs. J. W. Alford be recommended as a beneficiary of the Board, as he widow of the Rev. J. W. Alford.
