Liberty Cumberland Presbyterian Church

On November 11, 1853 Liberty Cumberland Presbyterian Church was established with 18 charter members under the leadership of Rev. George D. McLean. The first ruling elders were William Kilgore, George Jenkins and Lewis Jenkins. 1853 to 1855 services were held in a log school house at Weeks Campground. In year 1855 a log building was constructed at the present location. In 1855 the building now in use was erected.

The first Holy Communion was celebrated on February 16, 1858. Rev. R. T. Marlow preached with forty taking part in the Lords Supper.

The first Princeton Presbyterial Session was held here October, 1858. Sunday School was organized May, 1901 meeting in the afternoon. Rev. G. L. Woodruff was the pastor at that time.

In the year 1857 two black girls were accepted into the church. Rachel Young on July 12 and Letty Young on October 17. August 28, 1858 two black boys, King and George, became members. Rev. William Roach was the pastor.

The acre of land presently used by the church was given to the congregation by Thomas S. Jones in 1890. Mr. David Roberts was the first person laid to rest in the church cemetery, October, 1894.

In 1921 a beautiful stained glass window was purchased with Liberty War Bonds in memory of Rev. G. L. Woodruff.

Under the leadership of the pastor Rev. Morris Clark and church session members and Elders; Clinton Perry, Frank Wiggington, Tony Gray, Ollie Stephens, Jenning Mullins, and W. H. (Bud) Roberts, the church is engaged in a program for complete renewal and redecoration of the building.

Our present membership if fifty-two. Full time services are observed. As a landmark in the community, this old church has an interesting history spanning the years.
