The Friendship Society of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Breckinridge County, Kentucky was organized by the Rev. William E. Long on the 27th day of March, 1836. The church was reorganized by the Rev. Joshua Barton April 6, 1844. The charter members were J. P. Beauchamp, Edward Payne, Seth Parks, Aaron Norton, Allen Roberson and Theadore Norton.

The name of the church was changed by an act of the session July 6, 1844 from Friendship to New Hope and was recognized by presbytery on the last Saturday in November 1844. Transferred to the new book at request of each party and reorganized as Clifton Congregation of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. It was signed by S. J. Parks, clerk. We have no record who were the members of these parties. This is the first recording of the Clifton Mills Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

In December, 1872 land for the church was deeded by Thomas Adkinson, John Dent, Samuel Adkinson, and Thomas A. Board to Samuel Parks, George W. St. Clair, Edward Payne, elders of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and Thomas Adkinson, Arch Bridwell and Samuel Adkinson, trustees for the local school district.

In the 1880's Sister L. M. Woosley was the first female minister in Leitchfield Presbytery. Clifton was blessed to have her hold two revivals. Great crowds honored her with their presence.

The church was devastated by a tornado on April 28, 2002. It took nearly a year to rebuild the church for the santuary was severly damaged and lost its roof. The church was rededicated on April 27, 2003.
