FORMERLY EAST LAKE
The month of May 1988 was a very special month for the East Lake Church of Birmingham Presbytery. On May 1st, a ground breaking service was held for a new building. The service was the culmination of months of hard work and tough decisions. In 1986 the 92-year-old congregation decided to relocate from the East Lake community in Birmingham to a new area nine miles east of the present location. Birmingham Presbytery supported the decision with a gift of 4 1/2 acres of land on Old Springville Road, an area with great promise of growth and development. The new sanctuary will seat 250 and there will also be space for offices, nursery, kitchen, and a fellowship area that will double for Sunday school space. Construction should be completed by September of this year.
The other significant event took place in a called meeting of the presbytery on May 10. In that meeting presbytery gave permission for the congregation to change its name from East Lake to Advent. The new name reflects a major theological emphasis of the congregation; that Christ is present in the world through the Church.
Barry Anderson has pastored the church since 1985.--Barry Anderson, Reporter
