Texas Cumberland Presbyterian

1846

editor - Rev. A.J. McGown

"In 1846 Rev. A.J. McGown began the publication of the Texas Cumberland Presbyterian, and continued it for ten years as a private matter, after which he tried but failed to induce the synod to take the paper. This is said by some to have been the first Protestant paper published in the State. In 1873 Revs. J.H. Wofford and J.B. Renfroe began a paper at Tehuacana, which was absorbed the next year by the consolidation of the papers."

Texas Cumberland Presbyterian

Tehuacana, Texas

c1869-74 [date from Evans] or 1873-74

[note in Evans that Montreat has 1873-1874. I have not verified]

[Barrus - In 1874 The Cumberland Presbyterian bought the subscription list of the Texas Cumberland Presbyterian (Tehuacana) from the Rev. J.H. Wofford]

[McDonnold p. 602 - "The Texas Cumberland Presbyterian was not the same paper McGown edited, but a new enterprise, undertaken after his death. Its publication was begun by Rev. J.B. Renfro and Rev. J.H. Wofford, at Tehuacana, April, 1873, and it was continued until the Assembly's consolidation scheme absorbed all the private newspapers of the church. The sale of this paper to the church was accomplished in December, 1874. Wofford had previously bought out Renfro's interest.]

[Williams - "In 1879 Wofford began publishing the Texas Observer. This paper changed editors, places, and management, as well as name, and finally was discontinued."

["The Cumberland Presbyterian Quarterly Review," 1883, p. 125

"The Texas Observer, published at Dallas and edited by Rev. J.H. Wofford, is well filled with the best reading matter. It is a good family and church paper, representing especially the Cumberland Presbyterians in Texas and the West."]

[McDonnold, p. 602 - "In 1879 Mr. Wofford began the publication of a new paper, the Texas Observer, at Tehuacana. This paper has changed owners and editors several times, and the place of publication has also been frequently changed. It is now issued as the organ of Trinity University by a stock company. Under this arrangement Dr. E.B. Crisman and the Rev. J.S. Groves were until recently the editors. The Rev. W.B. Preston has lately become editor. Its name has been changed to the Texas Cumberland Presbyterian.]

The Texas Cumberland Presbyterian

By Rev. J.S. Groves, One of Its Editors

Some time in the latter part of 1886 or early in 1887 a stock company, consisting of D.M. Prendergast, Capt. T.W. Wade and some others, bought the Texas Observer from J.H. Wofford. The paper was moved from Dallas, Texas, to Mexia, Texas, and its name changed to the Texas Cumberland Presbyterian. The paper in its new location was for a short time under the editorial control of Rev. Messrs. W.M. and W.B. Allen. After their retirement the company secured the services of E.B. Crisman and the writer of this article as co-editors. This arrangement was made with the understanding that the editors were not to receive any remuneration for work done. This arrangement lasted until late in the fall of 1887, when the company secured the services of Rev. W. B. Preston as sole editor. After a few weeks' experience with the paper at Mexia, Brother Preston advocated its removal to Dallas, which was done, and the name changed to The Texas Witness. The Witness was conducted at Dallas about six months. The editor and proprietors became convinced that it could not be made to pay expenses, hence its publication was discontinued and the subscription list turned over the "The Cumberland Presbyterian." The paper received sufficient commendation and perhaps not too much criticism. It could not live on commendation, neither did it die of criticism, but for want of a competent patronage.
