What Cumberland
Presbyterians Believe ~ Book ~ by Ewell Kerr
Reagin (1900-1985), former
president of Bethel College, former dean of the Memphis Theological
Seminary, moderator of the 1936 General Assembly, and long-time writer
of Encounter. Published by the Heritage Committee of Cumberland
Presbytery. Proceeds benefit the Historical Foundation of the
Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the Cumberland Presbyterian Church
in America. Trade Paperback, 98 pages.
In the early-1990s, E. K. Reagin's classic work, What Cumberland
Presbyterians Believe went out-of-print after the last copies from
the 1983 fifth revised printing were sold. Because the book was based
on the 1883 Confession of Faith, which had been replaced in
1984, the decision was made not to reprint. The nostalgia and esteem
with which What Cumberland Presbyterians Believe was regarded was not
anticipated.
First published in 1936 in a private edition and then reprinted by the
Cumberland Presbyterian denomination in 1939, this book provided the
basis of belief for many Cumberland Presbyterians. In 1968, the revised
edition was first published.
The Heritage Committee of Cumberland Presbytery has an interest in
reprinting some of the classic Cumberland Presbyterian books that have
slipped out-of-print. This is the second of their reprint series (the
first was The Life and Times of Finis Ewing).
This book is based on the Confession of Faith adopted in 1883.
The references to the sections in this book is based on the section
numbers in the 1883 Confession.
With the adoption of a new Confession of Faith in 1984, the
organization changed as did the style of language of the document. For
the most part, however, the doctrinal positions of the Confession
remained basically the same.
