Product image Little Brown Church in the Vale. . .when did the lights go out?  ~  Book ~ by Bob G. Shupe, foreword by Ronnie Pittenger. Wheatmark Press, 2008. Trade paperback, 148 pages. In Little Brown Church, Bob Shupe ponders the state of the "small church" as we enter the 21st Century.

Why have small churches remained small? And why has this mandate in Mark 16:15 not impacted the thousands of small, denominational churches across the country? When you consider the plan of salvation, how can a church not grow?

Because of the positive growth in many nondenominational churches, some church leaders falsely assume they can have the same results by abandoning their denominational heritage. However, most people are attracted to a particular church because they feel welcomed by the people in that church, and because of that church's unique ministry in their community. While it may be helpful to de-emphasize the denominational connection, it is a mistake to abandon it.

As you read The Little Brown Church in the Vale, you will be challenged to take a fresh look at the direction your ministry and your church is taking.

The Author: Bob G. Shupe is a past moderator of the Nashville Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He has served on the presbyterial Cross-Cultural Task Force for the past eight years, working with Sudanese Christians who desire to establish a church in America. He was one of the original members of Malachi, a Christian Rock band, for twenty years and made two music mission trips to Colombia, South America. Mr. Shupe has served as the music coordinator for the Cumberland Presbyterian Board of Missions for two missions conferences and has served the Tusculum Cumberland Presbyterian Church, at different times, as Minister of Music since 1968. His lay ministry, Brother Bob Ministries, has lectured across the south east on church growth.
