BOYCE WALLACE WRITES ABOUT THE COLOMBIANS’ MISSION TOUR
TO SOUTH COLOMBIA
Beth and I had a beautiful experience in late February. We had what we called a mission tour (first for us) of churches and missions in the south of Colombia, starting with Popayán. We went six hours further south to Pasto where we have two preaching points. Then we went to a beautiful lake way up in the mountains and had a fresh trout lunch with fresh potatoes, platanos, RICE, and salad all out of locals gardens. We took a trip around the lake in a Colombian gondola. The homes are rustic with beautiful, hanging, blooming flowers on the front pòrches and balconies. It was really a Colombian Venice experience except for the paintings. But the Lord took care of this by painting beautiful living scenery for us to enjoy. We met at night with Christians at one of the preaching points.
Then we went to Ipiales, the border town with Ecuador and bought some things across the border that Indians had made. In the afternoon we went to Guachacal, a mountain town where we have a new group of believers who had organized a service of praise in the local stadium, with enough sound equipment to be heard all over town. What an experience! More than a dozen accepted Christ at the end of the service. Then back to Ipiales where we had another service in a much smaller area but with all the enthusiasm as the former. It began at 9 p.m. They are actually meeting on the grounds of a filling station beside the Pan American Highway. Beth and I suggested that they put up a sign on the highway "Fill up here for Colombia or Ecuador" with an arrow pointing to the gas tanks and another "Fill up here for Heaven" with an arrow pointing to the C P chapel in the back!
Early Sunday a.m. we loaded on the public bus and headed for Los Monos, with a stop in Sapuyes, the witch capitol of Colombia, where we have a small group determined to serve Christ and cast out the witches from their town! Another short moving experience! All of our experiences were with new Christians who don´t know how to fuss and gripe and carry on. How refreshing!!!
Finally we got to Los Monos and the reason for this excursion: dedicate a new chapel to the Lord of the Church. The name they chose for their church is Bet-El, House of God, the name of the first Meeting Place. It is a picturesque setting of farms pasted on the mountainsides, that gave meaning to the term a patch work quilt of greens, gold, purple and yellow. Beginning at 11 a.m. and finishing at 4 p.m. It was the nearest thing to an all day singing and preaching, with a 4:00 lunch scattered all around among the 300 + attending. It was one of my greatest joys to preach the dedication sermon. We wish you all could have been with us in these times of blessings. All the other Colombians agree with us that it was a time when God spoke to us in a new way.
