The 2008 program will assist the victims of the tragic cyclone that struck Myanmar earlier this year. Our Thanksgiving offering of the denomination has contributed over 2.2 million dollars to various hunger causes since it began in 1983. We will partnr with New Mission Systems International for the 2008 Loaves and Fishes Program.

Cyclone Nargis affected an estimated 2.4 million people. The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has recently reported that nearly 140,000 people are either dead or missing as a result of the cyclone. In addition, they are reporting that of the overall total of $480 million now requested by 13 UN agencies and 23 non-governmental organizations, only $178 million has been committed, leaving a need of $303 million! New Mission Systems International has the ability to effectively distribute funds directly to people in need in Myanmar. Our fundamental strategy will be to directly support individual villages to re-establish their farming infrastructure.
