Is God Calling YOU to Bi-Vocational Church Planting?

Did You Know?

  • That America is the world's third largest mission field?
  • That churches are dying everyday? (An average of about 10,000 churches close each year)
  • That more new churches are needed just to keep up with population growth?(Between 1990-2000, 105 new churches were established on the Front Range-an area that grew by 200% at the same time!)
  • That we live in one of the most unchurched areas of the country? (Church attendance in Denver is at a low of about 37% - about 7% below the national average of 44%)Valley of Gold
  • That planting new churches is one the most effective means of evangelism today?
    C. Peter Wagner in Church Planting for a Greater Harvest)
  • That church planting can be done by people who work a “regular job” as they plant the church (like the apostle Paul did)

What is a Bi-Vocational Church Planter?
Bi-Vocational church planters are men and women used by God to start churches. They are spiritually minded entrepreneurs who serve as catalysts in gathering a group to start the nucleus of a new church community. They are missionaries, and want to see new people come to Christ. As they are planting the church, they hold other employment that enables them to: (1) provide some of their living needs and (2) build relationships with non-believers. Bi-Vocational church planters also raise a portion of personal support

What Gifts are Needed?
While no "perfect" church planter exists; here are some things that help a bi-vocational church planter succeed:

  • A passion to reach "not yet Christians"/unchurched
  • Can build relationships with, and a community of diverse kinds of people
  • Can create a sense of ownership for the new ministry within the group and ministry supporters
  • A deep and growing personal faith
  • Flexibility, particularly in working at two jobs

In addition, the church planter should possess some of the following spiritual gifts:

  • Faith — grasps God's "impossible" vision, and trusts Him to bring it about
  • Leadership — inspires others to passionately puruse God's vision
  • Evangelism — communicates Christ to, and leads unbelivers to personal faith in Him
  • Administration — plans, sets goals and creates organization to bring them about
  • Teaching — communicates biblical truth in a clear and compelling way

Is God Calling YOU?
The call of God to the ministry of church planting will be discerned in the heart of the planter, recognized by others in the church, and confirmed by the mission agency. Some next steps you may take in understanding God's call:

  • Hearing God through Prayer and Bible study
  • Talking with mature believers who know you well and have observed you in ministry
  • Getting in touch with us and letting us know of your interests
