April 6, 1833 - Hopewell Presbytery - Mount Zion Meetinghouse in Gibson County, Tennessee
Calvin Filly and Hugh Hardican came forward and gave a relation of their experimental acquaintance with religion, and of their internal call and motives to the ministry, and Presbytery having testimonials in favour of their good moral character and of their being in the communion of the Church, Received them as Candidates for the Ministry. Ordered that Calvin Filly prepare a written discourse from Romans 6th Chapter and 23rd verse and Hugh Hardican from St. John 3rd Chapter and 16th verse to be read at our next Presbytery.

Calvin Filly read a discourse from a text previously assigned him which was sustained as part of trial. Ordered that he prepare a written discourse from Amos 4th Chapter 12th verse last clause.

On inquiry it was found that the order of last Presbytery relative to Calvin Philly's riding and preaching on the Carrol and Obion circuit has been complied with, with the exception of two months, which failure was owing to affliction.

Ordered that Calvin Philly and John A. Miller ride and the preach the whole of their time on the Forkeddeer Circuit from the 1st of June until our next Presbytery.

Ordered that Henry Bobbitt, James B. Ward and Calvin Philley prepare to stand examination on all those branches required by our book of discipline preparatory to ordination at our next stated Presbytery and that Henry Bobbitt deliver a discourse from Romans 1st Chapter and 16th Verse, James B. Ward from Col. 1st Chapter and 28th verse and Calvin Philley from Romans 10th Chapter and 10th verse and that Jabez Hickman preach the ordination sermon and James Stewart preside and give the charge.

Rev. R. G. Weddington, A. D. Thomas and Elder A. E. Cooper were chosen a committee to examine the Licentiates and candidates on English Grammar, Geography and divinity and Henry Bobbitt, Calvin Philley on all those branches required by our book of discipline preparatory to ordination.

The committee on Examinations made the following report which was adopted "The committee appointed to examine Henry Bobbitt and Calvin Philley on all those branches required in our Book of discipline preparatory to ordination beg leave to report that they have attended to the duty assign them and that in general the examination was satisfactory.

Agreeable to an order of last Presbytery Henry Bobbitt and Calvin Philley were examined on all those branches required by our Book of discipline preparatory to ordination. Each of them preached a sermon from a text previously assigned him and they having adopted the confession of faith of our church and satisfactorily answered the questions appointed to be put to probationers for the Holy ministry Presbytery proceeded to set them apart to the whole work of the ministry by Prayer and the imposition of hands. The ordination Sermon was preached by Rev. Jabez Hickman from Ezekial 33 Chapter and 6-7-8-9th verses. The Rev. James Stewart who had been appointed to preside and give the charge being absent the duty was attended to by the Rev. R. Baker. They were then commended to the grace of God and his holy keeping by a prayer. A hymn was sung and the congregation dismissed with the usual blessing. The newly ordained Bishops were invited to take their seats in Presbytery which they did accordingly.
