McDOWELL.--Rev. Arthur W. McDowell was
born in Illinois June 15, 1856. He professed religion while young
and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He joined Hopewell
Presbytery as a candidate for the ministry in 1880. He
was married to Miss Addie Bondurant at Hickory, in Shelby County,
Tenn., July 15, 1881. Brother McDowell was a man of more than
ordinary ability. Humboldt was his first pastorate. He has filled
some of our best pulpits in Tennessee, Illinois, Missouri and
Texas. He belonged to a preaching family. His father and two uncles
were Cumberland Presbyterian preachers. I was his first teacher
in his early school days, while his father was my professor in
mathematics at Bethel
College at McLemoresville, Tenn. Rev. A. W. McDowell died
at his home at Baltow College, Shelby County, Tenn., September
13, 1901, after five days' suffering with erysiplelas. He died
in the full assurance of his acceptance with God. He said, "I
am ready." He has left behind him a sorrowing wife and two
precious, bright boys. God bless them, and may the mantle of the
father and grandfather fall upon them; and to the mother: We commend
you to God, who will not leave you comfortless; and to his brother
and sister: The good Lord bless you both. Dry up your tears, and
be ready for the reunion where parting is no more. Jo.
McLeskey.
