Rev. Lewis H. Halcomb was born November 24, 1845. He went through the Civil War as an unconverted man, but all the while feeling that he ought to be a Christian. In November, 1865, he gave his heart to God. Soon after his conversion, he felt impressed to preach the gospel; but resisted for a time. In the year 1879 he surrendered all, and joined Trinity Presbytery, where he had such men as Revs. N. A. Davis, D. S. Crawford and J. P. Ferris, as leaders. H was received under care of presbytery at Sanpedro Church, in Houston County, Texas. He was licensed at the Pleasant Grove Church, and ordained to the full work of the gospel ministry December, 1883, at Rusk, Texas. Rev. N. A. Davis preaching the ordination sermon and Rev. D. S. Crawford giving the charge. Brother Halcomb was born and reared in Cherokee County, Texas. He has served his church faithfully; has stood true to principle. I have known him for the past twenty-seven years; have worked with him in many meetings, and have known him to admire and love him. Brother Halcomb while active was a fine revivalist, believing in the gospel as the power of God, and in the use of old-time songs. He is feeble in health now and not able to preach very much, but his heart still goes out to his church, while church he has labored so long to build up. I have known him to ride a distance of from fifty to sixty miles to preach.
He, like many of our pioneer preachers, has undergone many hardships to establish the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in the bounds of his presbytery now the Texas-Greenville Presbytery.
He has spent his ministerial life in his home presbytery feeling that there was plenty to do at home; he never felt it was necessary to go into other fields and neglect his home work. Eternity alone will reveal the good that this godly man has done.
He is now nearing the 70th mile-post in life true as steel to the doctrines of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
