Goble.--The subject of this notice, the Rev. John Goble,
was born in Washington county, Pa., April 4, 1817; and died March
11, 1888, at his residence near West Cairo, Ohio, in the seventy-first
year of his age. Father Goble was educated at Miami
University, Ohio, where he graduated with distinction
and honor at an early age. He spent most of his life in teaching
school in Alabama. He was ordained to the full work of the ministry
in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church when about twenty six years
old. He loved to study history and prophecy. He loved to tell
the story of the cross, to talk of the wonderful love of God--how
he loved mankind, how he died to save all. Those who knew Father
Goble best loved him most. His most intimate friends were his
most constant associates. Home testimonials are of more value
than any that can be said by those who have been brought into
contact with one only in public life. It is in the shadow of private
life--in the home, in the neighborhood--where the true inner life
of the individual is manifest. Brother Goble's life and character
will stand this severe test. He was a genuine Christina man, ever
manifesting the spirit of the Master. We believe that in the death
of Brother Goble the Church has lost a devoted and earnest minister,
mighty in word and doctrine. That the presbytery to which he belonged
has lost a safe counsellor, one truly attached to the interests
of the Church. The family has lost a kind father, the community
a good citizen. We rejoice to know that he found his Master faithful
unto death, and that he passed from this life in the full assurance
of a better and purer life, where God's servants never grow old,
and where disease and death can never come. To the children and
grandchildren who are thus bereft, we tender our heartfelt sympathy,
and commend them to their father's God.
S.
K. HOLTSINGER.
