And the brethren talked of this Godly man's life and his triumphant death and his home where he is now and as the saintly and grand man. Rev. M. G. Milligan talked of his life as he knew him, with the other brethren, shouts broke out all over the house, and I never was in a grander meeting."

BROWN--Rev. W. E. Brown, son of James and Helen Brown, was born in Obion County, Tenn., April 28, 1835, and departed this life at the home of his son, L. R. Brown, near Sulphur Springs, DeKalb Co., Ala., July 12, 1912, in the 78th year of his age. He was buried in Sulphur Spring cemetery, in the community where almost his whole life had been spent and which life had been so lived as to so win the esteem and love of the people that a host of them followed him to the grave, and with tearful eyes and melted hearts, in solemn silence listened to the funeral sermon by the writer, he using for a text, "He was a good man full of the Holy Ghost and faith." Acts 11:24. In early manhood he was powerfully converted in a great Holy Ghost revival conducted by Rev. J. W. L. Smith, of precious memory, and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. And about which time he was married to Miss Margaret Blake, who proved to be a help meet indeed-a woman who for solidity of character, and for the many other characteristics that made her the true and noble woman that she was, and one of the best of wives and mothers, and who went before him about ten years. Some few years after his conversion he was licensed and ordained to preach the gospel by the Taladega Presbytery. But arriving at manhood, husbandhood and fatherhood so closely linked with our awful civil war, and he reared in a new country undeveloped in so many ways, made it a trying time and condition in which to prepare for the ministry, and provide for a growing family without financial aid from the church. Yet, his love for God and man urged him on amid a multitude of trials and difficulties to the close of his long life, which ended so triumphantly and gloriously while surrounded by seven children and their children to whom he talked as if almost with Christ on the Mount of Transfiguration, and telling them time and again "My cup is full." And not long before he breathed his last, sang, as best he could in his weak condition, a portion of the hymn,

"My latest sun is sinking fast,
  My race is nearly run.
Come angel band, come and around me stand,
  On bear me away on your snowy wings to my immortal home."

He possessed many, indeed, of the endowments and capabilities which constitute fitness to make a great preacher; among which were a physique, which gave a vitality, activity, strength, perseverance and courage to the superlative degree. A mind clear and well balanced and of quick perception and of great capabilities, a will strong, rich and sweet in melody. But the best of all the elements of his character was the attributes of his big, warm, generous and noble heart, possessed of Holy Ghost, heart-felt religion. A heart full of emotion, pure and profound and easily stirred to its deepest and depths. Which often impelled him to weep and to shout aloud the praise of God in the congregation, in many a home, and sometimes while traveling along the high way. He was a unique character, living in a unique period, and in a unique field of labor. He loved all true Christians, and while free from sectarian seclusion and bigotry, he was intensely in love with his own church, and stood upright and unshaken and unshakable amid the furious storm on Unionism. He and writer were warm friends, yea, we were more than friends; we loved each other deeply and tenderly. I shall miss him much and sadly. His brother, Rev. S. W. Brown, was present at his burial, he is in his 87th year, and though with eyes full of tears, with a heart full of faith and hope, he is just waiting serenely and joyfully for his summon to go. Rev. N. S. Milligan was present and assisted in the funeral services, and spoke pertinent words and prayed a fervent prayer for all. "Oh let me die the death of the righteous, and may my end be like his." May the surviving loved ones all meet the dear one who shall wait and watch at the beautiful gate for their coming to join him.--Rev. R. D. Shook.
