Smith Temple Cumberland Presbyterian Church
1890 - 1982 Church History

In the year 1890, a small group of Presbyterian believers felt the need of having a church home. They worshiped God in their private homes, having prayer and testimonial services. The group consisted of Mr. William Bastic, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Boaz, Mr. and Mrs. Cal Harris, Mr. Henry Jackson, Mr. and Mrs. George Peeler, Mrs. Frances England, Mr. Luke Bastic and Mr. Joe Jackson.

While they were making plans to have a church, a family who was interested moved to Mayfield. This family consisted of Mr. Rand Smith, his wife Debbie Ann Smith, and two sons, Will and John. He sold their farm, which was about six miles east of Mayfield. the farm had a church building on it. Even though it was seldom used, the family had become accustomed to it as a place of worship.

He and his family became acquainted with the Christian group mentioned and joined them in their meetings. They decided they would build a new church. They put their money together and purchased a lot on South Fifth Street. They donated lumber and brick, and other materials needed for building. Before the year 1890 was over, they had a new small frame church finished.

Mr. Smith had been so helpful to them in their efforts in every way, they decided to name the new church after him. So it was named Smith Temple Cumberland Presbyterian church. It was on the same spot our church is today.

The first pastor was Reverend Holburt. The first members were the ones who had the church built. Many other people began to worship with them. Attendance and membership grew rapidly.
