
HARVEY HILL
Funeral services for the Rev. Harvey V. Hill, 78, of Henderson will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Pine Grove [Cumberland] Presbyterian Church, near Brachfield, with the Revs. R. E. Thomas, Charles Hunt, D. C. Madkins, Amos Odum and O. C. Parker officiating. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery under the direction of Jenkins-Garmon Funeral Home.
Rev. Hill died Thursday, Dec. 24 at Henderson Memorial Hospital. He was born July 24, 1914 in Rusk County and was a lifelong resident. He attended Rusk County public schools, Bishop College in Marshall and Texas Baptist Institute in Henderson. Rev. Hill was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was a minister of the gospel for 48 years, serving as pastor of churches in Rusk, Smith and Cherokee counties. Rev. Hill was a moderator of the East Texas Presbytery and president of the Extension Board. He also served as clerk of the Presbyterial Board and moderator of the Texas Synod. He served as dean of the state Sunday School Convention and on the Board of Missions and Evangelism on the national level.
Survivors include: his wife, Mrs. Alma M. Hill; two daughters, Pearline Ward and Clara Wallace; a son, J. B. Hill; a son-in-law, Thomas Ward; a daughter-in-law, Myrtis Hill; a stepmother, Mrs. Bessie Hill; four sisters, Millie Gray, Willie M. Robinson, Johnnie M. Lilly and Bettie J. Hall; five brothers, Otis Hill, Herman Hill, Delbert Hill, Jasper Hill and Eugene Hill; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Floyd Starling, C. D. Jones, Robert Jones, Lee Madkins, Dell C. Madkins and Pat Madkins.
Reverend H. V. Hill, son of the late Rev. John and Pearl Hill was born in Rusk County, Texas July 24, 1914. He attended the Rusk County public schools, Bishop College in Marshall, Texas and graduated from Texas Baptist Institute, Henderson, Texas. He accepted Christ at the age of eleven at Pine Grove C.P. Church under the leadership of his grandfather, the Rev. Felix C. Hill. He was married to a devoted, loving and supportive Miss Alma M. King October 27, 1934. To this union of fifty-eight years three children were born. He was loving, faithful and God fearing father and taught his children in like-manner. He was called to the ministry at the age of twenty and was ordained into the East Texas Presbytery by Rev. Felix Hill, Rev. J. P. Hampton, Rev. George Tribble and Rev. S. L. Hill. After preaching at Pine Grove for three years, he was called to pastor there in 1944 where he served until his death. He also served as pastor of St. Bettie Chapel C. P. Church, Henderson, Texas; Rock Hill C. P. Church, Jacksonville, Texas and Tyler Memorial C. P. Church, Tyler, Texas. Rev. Hill was a member of Jupiter Star Masonic Lodge No. 292 for many years.
He departed this life Thursday, December 24, 1992 in Henderson Memorial Hospital, Henderson, Texas after an extended illness, leaving to mourn his home-going, a loving wife, Mrs. Alma M. Hill of Henderson, Texas; three children, Mrs. Pearline Ward, Mr. Jesse B. Hill and Mrs. Clara L. Wallace; a stepmother, Mrs. Bessie Hill of Henderson, Texas; one son-in-law, Mr. Thomas Ward; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Myrtis Hill; four sisters, Millie Gray of Indio, Calif., Willie M. Robinson of Banning, Calif., Johnnie Mae Lilly, Blythe, Calif., and Bettie J. Hall of Henderson, Texas; five brothers, Odis Hill of Cochilla, Calif., Herman Hill of Longview, Texas; Delbert Hill, Cochilla, Calif., Jasper Hill of Henderson, Texas and Eugene Hill of Indio, Calif., ten grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Reverend Hill served the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in various capacities. He was Moderator of the East Texas Presbytery and President of the J. E. Dixon Extension Board, of which he was a charter member, serving in this capacity at the time of his death.
He also served as Clerk of the East Texas Presbytery and Presbyterial Board; Moderator of the Texas Synod; Dean of the State Sunday School Convention and also as a member of the Board of Missions and Evangelism on the National level.
