Rev. D. R. Burkley, an outstanding gospel minister of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church (Colored) parted this life Sunday, January 23, 1955 at 5:45 o'clock p.m., at 2105 South Tenth Street, Waco, Texas.
He was the moderator of the Texas Synod for 23 years; treasurer of the Brazos River Presbytery; President of the Board of Missions of the Brazos River Presbytery; President of the Ministerial Relief Board of the General Assembly and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the General Assembly. Her served in all these capacities until the end.
He pastored the Rock Spring C.P.C. 39 years. Preached his first sermon in said church and last the first Sunday in March, 1954. He pastored Meridian C.P.C. for 32 years. Preached his last sermon there the fourth Sunday in February, 1954. Pastored the Clifton C.P.C. some 20 years. Known throughout the state of Texas among all denominations. Has gone to all at their call. He was loved by all whom he met and knew him. He will be missed because his place is vacant, not only in the home, but in the community, general meetings, state and district and all the churches he pastored.
He has landed many a thousand in the name of the Lord. His sermons were beyond comparison, so inspirational. He buried over 1055 souls, caused over 1200 souls to come over on the Lord's side. He was a devoted Christian, husband and father, a wonderful counselor to all, a friend to all ministers and a good soldier of the Lord.
He leaves to mourn his passing a wife, Mrs. E. H. Burkley; a daughter, Mrs. R. V. Halliburton; an adopted daughter, Mrs. Eva J. Colbert, 603 South Adams, Midland, Texas; a foster son, Joe D. Toward of Houston, Texas; a nephew, Mr. M. J. Andrews; three grandchildren A/3 James R. Tennison, Charlotte and Linda Colbert and a host of relatives and friends.
We loved him, yes we loved him, God loved him more and he has sweetly called him beyond the shining shore. We do thank everyone for the beautiful flowers, telegrams and condolences.
