Antioch Second Cumberland Presbyterian Church was built the first time in 1878, on a site on town creek that was given to blacks of Cumberland Presbyterian faith, by a white brother, W. P. Tanner of Athens, December 7, 1878.
The present congregation has no record of who the elders and the pastor were at that time.
A few years ago when it was definitely decided to build a new church, it was found that the only information recorded in the Limestone County courthouse was an agreement, and not a deed. The elders of that time had met the requirements set forth, but if there was a deed it was never recorded. This fact posed a problem for the trustees. However, with God's guidance, in December 1978 one hundred years after the church was built, some of the trustees, Elder George Wiggins, Elder Wilbon Jones, Deacon George Maxwell and Deacon Will Sledge, were able to find, the great grandson of the donor, who was happy to give a deed.
The present congregation experienced many happy days in the little church on the banks of town creek.
On January 26, 1980, the congregation moved to the present site of their new church home at 923 Brownsferry Street, Athens, Alabama.
Church school was held in the Fellowship Hall January 27, 1980. The first worship service was held Sunday, February 3, 1980. Pastor, Rev. Walter Pride delivering the message.
Traditionally, Antioch has not been a church who changed ministers frequently. In the recollection of the present membership there has been only about seven ministers prior to Rev. Walter Pride. They were: Rev. Newton Woodruff, Rev. Jenkins Blackburn, Rev. G. H. Bell, Rev. Joseph McDonald, Rev. Joseph Hayden, Rev. Pearl Dancy, and Rev. Frank Moore.
Rev. Moore left Antioch to become pastor at Macedonia C.P. Church in Decatur, Alabama, where he is still serving.
Rev. Pride came to us a very young minister. The majority of the present membership grew up under his pastoral guidance, the affect of that guidance is reflected in their love for their church and humanity.
The church and the Rev. Pride grew together. During his ministry, we have come from the era of the pot-bellied stove to central heating and air conditioning. Therefore we praise God today.
