Having come from South Carolina to establish a home, William Killough and his wife Sarah Howell Killough, along with other families, helped organize the Five Mile Cumberland Presbyterian Church in the Huffman area of Birmingham, Alabama in 1841. The first buildings were made of logs, until the white frame sanctuary, which still stands, was erected in 1880. In 1906, when many of the Cumberland Presbyterian Churches voted to join the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, Five Mile Church also joined.
